It was a chilly November evening in New York City, and my daughter and I were walking up Broadway. Nora noticed a guy sitting inside a cardboard box next to a newsstand. She pulled at my coat sleeve and said, "That man' s cold, Daddy. Can we take him home?"

I don' t remember my reply, but I do remember a sudden heavy feeling inside me. I had al-ways been delighted at how much my daughter noticed in her world, whether it was birds in flight or children playing. But now she was noticing suffering and poverty. She wasn' t even four.

A few days later, I saw an article in the newspaper about volunteers who delivered meals to elderly people. The volunteers went to a nearby school on a Sunday morning, picked up a food package, and delivered it to an elderly person. I signed us up. Nora was excited about it. She could understand the importance of food, so she could easily see how valuable our job was. When Sunday came, we picked up the package and phoned the elderly person we' d been assigned. She invited us right over.

The building was depressing. When the door opened, facing us was a silver-haired woman in an old dress. She took the package and asked if we would like to come in. Nora ran inside. I re-luctantly followed. Our hostess showed us some photos of her family. Nora played and laughed. I accepted a second cup of tea. When it came time to say good-bye, we three stood in the doorway and hugged. I walked home in tears.

Where else but as volunteers do you have the opportunity to do something enjoyable that' s good for yourself as well as for others? Indeed, the poverty my daughter and I helped lessen that Sunday afternoon was not the woman' s alone--it was in our lives, too. Now Nora and I regularly serve meals to needy people and collect clothes for the homeless. Yet, as I' ve watched her grow over these past four years, I still wonder--which of us has benefited more?

    根據下面資料,回答{TSE}題

Laziness is a sin. Everyone knows that. We have probably all had lectures pointing out that laziness is immoral, that it is wasteful, and that lazy people will never amount to anything in life.

But laziness can be more harmful than that, and it is often caused by more complex reasons than the simple wish to avoid work. Some people who appear to be lazy are suffering from much more serious problems. They may be so distrustful of their fellow workers that they are unable to join in any group task for fear of being laughed at or fear of having their ideas stolen. These people who seem lazy may be deadened by a fear of failure that prevents fruitful work. Or other sorts of fantasies may prevent work: some people are so busy planning, sometimes planning great deals of fantastic achievement, that they are unable to deal with whatever "lesser" work is on hand. Still other people are not avoiding work, strictly speaking; they are nearly procrastinating—rescheduling their day.

Laziness can actually be helpful. Like procrastinators, some people look lazy when they are really thinking, planning, researching. We should all remember that some great scientific discover-ies occurred by chance. Newton wasn' t working in the orchard when the apple hit him and he devised the theory of gravity. Taking a rest can be particularly helpful to the athlete who is trying too hard or the doctor who' s simply working himself overtime too many evenings at the clinic.

So be careful when you're tempted to call someone lazy. That person may be thinking, rest-ing or planning his or her next book.

第36題 The main idea of this passage is that__________.

    A.laziness is a moral sin

B.there are advantages and disadvantages in being lazy

C.laziness is the sign of deep-seated emotional problems

D.lazy people do more careful work

    第37題 The passage states that__________.

    A.laziness is a disease

B.laziness is more beneficial than harmful

C.a good definition of laziness is emotional illness

D.some people appear lazy because they are insecure

第38題 Which of the following conclusion does the passage support?

A.Most of the time laziness is a virtue.

B.Most assembly line workers are lazy.

C.The word laziness is sometimes applied incorrectly.

    D.Most insecure people are lazy.

第39題 The italicized word "" devised" in the third paragraph probably means__________.

    A.understood

    B.wrote

    C.formulated

    D.proved

    第40題 The final paragraph is__________.

    A.critical

    B.serious

    C.satirical

    D.Humorous
